Utah
The Utah gymnastics team overcame a rocky start and took advantage of UCLA's even rockier finish to win its opening meet, 194.875-193.850, in Pauley Pavilion. A win seemed out of the question for the No. 2 Utes after they kicked off the season with two falls on the uneven bars. Despite righting the ship after the disastrous start, Utah went into the final rotation trailing the No. 3 Bruins (5-1) by .325. A shocking finish on the floor exercise by UCLA, which committed three falls and a major break, let the Utes back into the chase. Utah responded with a solid beam set to snatch its third straight victory over the Bruins. |

UCLA
UCLA took an early lead after scoring a 48.625 on vault in rotation one. The Bruins received high marks from Richardson (season-high 9.9), junior Ashley Peckett (9.75) and freshman Ariana Berlin (9.725). The Bruins maintained their lead in the second rotation by scoring a 48.675 on bars. On beam, the Bruins raised their level of performance up a notch, scoring their first 49 score of the year, a 49.0 to increase their lead to .325, 146.3-145.975. The meet went down to the wire with UCLA on floor and Utah on beam. The Bruins suffered a few mental mistakes and a few falls, with Maranda Smith's 9.775 being the team's top score. |
