Platinum. The Platinum Performance Cycling Team is a Santa Barbara based team with a diverse group of talented riders. The teams main focus is acquiring cross country results and new for 2008 is the addition of a road race team.

I suppose it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that knows me that I’ve decided to still go to Everest Challenge. I told myself and others that I would not make a decision until after my climb on Wednesday, so that’s what I did. Going into Wednesday I was feeling better every day and knew that my decision was becoming increasingly likely. Some of you probably think it was inevitable, but I really did give it serious consideration. The pain is nearly gone, but some discomfort lingers, especially if I move funny. I can breathe deep, cough, sneeze, and blow snot rockets. Just don’t make me laugh. The safety is my biggest concern and I’ve been very cautious on rides and especially descending yesterday. I don’t know what to say, except that I don’t think doing this will be any less safe than staying in Santa Barbara and doing the lake ride and Worlds… again…
Anyway, I’m going into this with lowered expectation. I was thinking I coud get some points out of this, but now I’ll be happy just to finish in the top half.
So, I spent this morning making final changes to my bike. I’m taking the TCR instead of the Tarmac because I want the power data, both for pacing and after-the-fact overanalysis. Pretty funny since a big motivation for getting the Tarmac was a lighter bike for Everest Challenge, and getting the CinQo for having power data when switching between race wheels and training wheels…...

I can’t decide whether to make the 6 hour, 375 mile drive up to Copperopolis for the 63 mile road race on Saturday, or bail on that and hit the Del Mar and Ontario pair of crits down south that weekend instead.
Copperopolis is supposed to be an amazing race on amazingly bad roads so thats kinda plus and minus. My biggest hesitation is that its a long drive for one race when I can stay much closer to home and get two crits in. I used to think road races were my thing, but I’ve been doing much better in crits lately and getting killed in the road races. So add to the 6 hours each way the likelyhood that I will get dropped off the back, my hesitation increases.
But on the other hand, Del Mar is pretty far away too, and Ontario is a minute 4/5 mixed race, I’ve already paid for Coperoppolis, and so has Chester.
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRG!
Opinions, advice, or whatever would be be greatly appreciated.

So we have been pretty much in the middle of nowhere all weekend and without internet access. We were driving back from the crit in Dinuba and just after passing Tulare, we see a sign for a rest stop with internet access. I’ll do reports and pics later, but the short of it is that I got 28th in Pine Flat out of 50something starters, and 16th at Dinuba in a combined 4/5 field out of 32 starters. I mostly got screwed up on position again, this time getting pinched to the inside on a corner I wanted to be on the outside for, having to slow down because we were coming in at too shallow of an angle, and losing lots of position before the final corner. By the time the sprint was on, I was out of contention and just kinda cruised in for a mid-pack finish. And there was a crash too on one of the sketchy corners, literally right in front of me. He went down and I just kind of skirted around him. Yikes.

Steve is insane.
He wants to do an 80 mile race 266 miles away to get his 10th race and upgrade to Cat 4.
That’s next weekend. But to prepare, he is doing the Solvang Double Century this weekend.

I finally got off my butt and registered for a bunch of upcoming events. This weekend is the Grand Tour Highlands Double Century. Up next is the LaMirada Grand Prix on July 7th and San Luis Obispo Downtown Criterium Classic on August 12th. The Sisquoc Road Race is supposed to be on August 4th, but I haven’t seen any flyers or registration links yet.
Of course I’m going with Kim to the Vineman 70.3 on July 22nd, Everest Challege on September 22-23, and the Lighthouse Century on September 29th.
Update: due to (I believe) a case of food poisoning, I will not be doing the double century this weekend.
