OSM Data

As I mentioned in my last weekly summary, I got a Garmin Edge 305 for my 28th birthday. Kim knew that it was the only thing I wanted for my birthday and she managed to arrange to split the cost with my parents. I’ve been using with it all week and have learned a lot about it, but I was especially looking forward to taking it up Old San Marcos today (and Painted Cave tomorrow). It showed pretty much what I expected, 1,200 feet gained in just under 3 miles. Update: it took a bit of work (and involved some manual editing), but I was able to isolate the climb from the rest of the ride.

Monday's Profile

My Monday ride took me out along the coast and then back to work up and around the backside of Montecito and Mountain Drive. The weather was really bad and I probably should have stuck to a lower road because I ended up sliding out when I crossed the wet and slick center line, brusing my ribs and knee. If you look at the motionbased data, you will probably be able to see my speed drop off significantly about 17.8 miles into the ride.

Note that it does appear that there is mac software for it (Sean was asking). And you can also upload the data directly into MotionBased without going through their Training Center software. The unit has a barometric altimeter in addition to the GPS altitude data. The data from the barometric altimeter is used during the ride to show elevation and ascent (that’s why the 205 can’t show that information), but the Training Center apparently shows the GPS elevation data. However, if I upload directly to MotionBased without going through Training Center, it seems to use the barometric data, or combines it with the GPS data.

Previously I was using RouteSlip to get elevation profiles. Here is a porition of the Santa Paula loop that I did a few weeks ago.
