I took the fourth section of the CPA exam today. This section was the hardest for me. It covered business law and individual income taxes. I was looking at the study material, and I saw ‘perfecting a security interest’. Huh? I knew my chances of passing were slim after that. After some studying over the last few days, it’s possible I knew just enough to pass. I’m not going to hold my breath though. But I’m also not going to study more until I get my scores next month. :p

Why would you waste all your time and energy on exams that you haven’t studied for, just to have to retake them????????????
— anonymous at Nov 21, 04:34 AMYou evidently don’t know me very well. I took the SAT without any studying and got perfect on the Math. I took an LSAT practice test without any studying and got a 178, almost perfect. I’ve won many Math contests. Why would somebody like me think they could do well on a test they haven’t studied much for? Who knows if I’ll need to retake them? I could have passed them all.
You also don’t know much about the CPA exam. You can only take it during the first and second month of each quarter. If I didn’t take it now, it would be 2 months until I could take it. They do not give out practice tests, so there is no way to know how you will do on the test until you take it. After you take it, if you don’t pass, you know what you need to do better on, and concentrate your time on. So I take it now to see what I need to study so I can pass it next time.

— anonymous at Nov 21, 04:51 PMShe has studied for them, just not obsessively. But there are little flash cards all over the house and she’s been running a study/review/prep program on her computer in the evenings. It may even be the same one you linked to, I’m not sure because I wasn’t paying that much attention to it. The real issue with this last test is that she didn’t take the classes that cover the material…
— Steve at Nov 21, 05:14 PMthat’s not a sample test. Those are sample questions. Its not full length, and nowhere does it say how many you need right to pass.
— Kim at Nov 21, 08:42 PMGood luck on the tests results Kim! Sleeping during business law class? lol. The tax section is easier with practical experience, but tough unless you memorize real well. You can’t always rely on common sense for tax law.
Back in the day when I took the test, it was a two day grind – no computers, no calculators.
Kids have it so easy now!
— CPA Roadie at Nov 21, 08:44 PMIt’s certainly very convenient to be able to take the test picemeal, and during the week, not to spoil weekend plans. I don’t think the pass rate is any better, so things even out I guess.
I haven’t worked at a CPA firm, so I have no experience with many of the topics. I know I’m at a disadvantage, and won’t take it too personaly if I don’t pass.
Thanks for the well wishes! (Oh, and I haven’t taken a business law class, but I may have slept through it if I did.)
