Kim got a great picture of me “suffering” about up the last climb just as it pitched up to about 10%…

Day 1 of Everest Challenge is in the books. My race went about as expected; I had a hard time with a lot of deep breathing due to the discomfort from the fractured ribs, and eventually had to disconnect from the lead group of about 20 a few miles after Tom’s place. I tried to keep track of my position but eventually with passing, unpassing, repassing, etc. I lost count. I figure about 20 of my field finished ahead of me. The most annoying part was that I got passed with about 1K to go and if I had lower gearing I may have been able to keep up with him but as it was I was pretty fried and was pushing 350+ watts up the ~12% grade just to keep from falling over. We didn’t do the South lake climb (the last 7 miles) last year because of the snow, diverting instead of Lake Sabrina. It was quite an ass-kicker, more than I expected, and just when I thought I was about to be done, two guys standing at “the end” pointed up a driveway that took up up another steep but short grade to the finish in the upper parking lot.

Update: I was 14th with a time of 7:41 and change. There were 52 registered, a handfull did not start and only 30-something finished.

  1. Nice job Steve, I wouldn’t even attempt this race.

Why the Giant instead of the tarmac?

Josh Rennie at Sep 21, 04:11 PM

  2. the giant has the power meter. I would have liked to use the Tarmac as it is lighter and more comfortable, but I figured the power data would help with pacing…

  3. great job sweetie!
